Spider-Man Without Spider-Man

A while back it was announced that Kraven the Hunter would be the last entry into Sony’s Spider-Man universe.

Apparently the studio was struggling with ideas about how to make Spidey’s rogues gallery interesting without including the web-head himself because of whatever dark pact they made with Disney. And, while they certainly had success with Venom, they are throwing in the towel because everything else has flopped.

Now, I have no greater pet peeve than wasted potential. So please enjoy these five pitches I have come up with for what could have been done with one of the richest cast of supporting characters in all of comics.
(Sony, I am open to contract work.)

  1. The Sinister Six – Sony kept trying to make a Sinister Six movie happen. Well here you go: Make it a heist movie in which the Black Cat assembles a team in order to steal from The Rose.

  1. Knight & Fog – British crime drama series featuring Knight & Fogg as reformed super villains who now contract with the police to investigate super crime using their old underworld contacts. Also opens the door to include other Spidey bad guys that they chase down.

  1. Mary-Jane – Teen drama series centered on Mary Jane, Felicia Hardy, & Gwen Stacy dealing with romance drama and the angst of growing up in a world where half the people seem to be developing superpowers. Think Freaks and Geeks set in the Marvel Universe.

    4. Sandman – Sandman decides to go straight. He does his best to be heroic but is greeted with suspicion. Finally he gives up, resorts to his old ways, rob’s a billionaire CEO, and is hailed as a folk hero.

  2. 5. Spider-Woman – Jessica Drew is an escapee from a secret government program dedicated to giving normal humans super powers. She is working as a private detective and trying to lay low when an agent of said program finds her and gives her a choice: He’ll let her go, but only if she helps him track down other escaped subjects like herself.

Thanks very much. I hope you have enjoyed my little indulgence into what might have been.

Till next time, be good.

But not too good 😉

My Super Mural

For years I drew caricatures at the annual Superman Celebration in Metropolis, IL. I was fortunate enough to enjoy a prime location right out front of the Super Museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of Superman memorabilia.

I was also fortunate to be asked by the Super Museum owners/managers Adam and Morgan (shoutout) to recreate and update the comic page mural that composed a corner panel of their building. As you can see, it definitely needed some love.

The page was based on a script for an un-produced made-for-TV movie that was part of the old George Reeves series. I loved the old black and white episodes as a kid, so getting this right was important to me.

Here are some character studies I did of the cast to make sure I could get the likenesses right.

Then with that pinned down, I moved on to compose and letter the page writ large.

After that I proceeded to the inking stage. I had to work extra big. Usually when making comics I draw about 33% bigger than what will actually get printed which makes the artwork look tighter and hide any errors, but I didn’t have that advantage here.

Then I colored it all up!

It was definitely more work than my usual comic page, and probably the closest I will ever get to drawing Supes professionally. It was also a lot of fun, pushed my nostalgia buttons, and an honor to make my small contribution to the great canon of Superman. I’m very proud of the results.

Should you ever find yourself in Southern Illinois, I highly recommend checking out the Super Museum, the giant Superman statue in the town square, and the Superman Celebration the second weekend of June every year.

In case you haven’t notices, I have a warm place in my heart for the town, its people, and the celebration. It’s half street fair, half comic convention. Metropolis has been foundational to me and my career, and I’m pleased to have left my small mark on the town.

Hope you’re enjoying your summer. More soon.

Till next time, be good.

But not too good 😉
